Emerging Technology Post # 3

Hey there! I decided to focus on Tumblr as my Third emerging technology.

I would first like to say - I'm 100% addicted. It's kind of a problem.

It looks completely different than any other social networking site I've seen. To sign up, you enter your email address, a password & what you want your URL to be. I chose vivant-ensemble. It seems to have become my default url. There are 7 options for posting - Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio or Video. If you choose to not post your first post immediatly, it then walks you through personalizing your blog: through adding a Title (mine is "You Musn't Give Your Heart To A Wild Thing"), a profile picture & if you choose, a new layout. They give you the basic tumblr layout. Once you do this, it encourages you to begin "following" people. If you follow them, anything they post appears on your homescreen. If you know the person's URL or username, you can easily follow them.

I discovered I had multiple friends who are using tumblr, so I now follow all of them. I've posted nearly every type of post I could - I focus mainly on text, pictures & audio however.

Despite it looking completely different from any other social network site, it really is quite easy to use. I've discovered that this tends to be where the more artisty types gather. I follow alot of people who I feel post beautiful pictures they find online, and I've now become addicted to finding beautiful pictures. There's also alot of band talk on tumblr - photos from concerts posted, and stories traded about.

I actually started using this at the time of the first emerging technology post, a few weeks before because I forgot it had to be over podcasting.

Like I said previously - I'm completely addicted to it now.

My site is http://vivant-ensemble.tumblr.com
I haven't told alot of my friends about it, simply because I tend to post things that are more personal to me & reveal alot about how I'm currently feeling.

Alright, so.

(I'd first like to apologize - I've been fighting off several different things in the past month and a half & it's caused me to fall severely behind in my school work. The podcast blog will be posted shortly...)

For my second emerging technology post, I've decided to focus on twitter. When I was introduced to twitter, it was explained to me as "just your facebook status". I do believe this is a good summation of what twitter is. Basically, all twitter asks is - What Are You Doing?

I've found this to be an easy way to keep up on my friends who live in other parts of the country, and bands that I deeply love. Through "following" people, you see their updates on your homepage. These updates can be anything from the mundane, to informative or even just funny.

I began using Twitter over a year ago, when it was just a baby site. My exboyfriend introduced me to it, and at first I thought it was ridiculous. Who really cares? However, now I use it to keep in touch with my friends who are scattered across the country. We all attend loads of concerts & we always want to know how each other's most recent concerts have gone. Instead of having to retell the same stories over and over, they know how the night is going. We tell funny stories back and forth across it, and when something bad has happened, we know that after we send that twitter, all of our friends are going to be praying for us.

Twitter is also a great way to keep up on musical artists that you love. So many times, bands will post tweets about the tour dates they just announced, or the contest they're holding for free tickets. It was because of twitter that my best friend & I were able to work as catering volunteers at Warped Tour, and subsequently met every single band playing at Warped.

It definitely is user friendly. As with all new things, it takes a few try's to fully catch on, but it doesn't take long & they really walk you through it all. As you get more comfortable with it, you can change things around, based on what you want.

I make no guarantees that my posts make sense...

funny how it rained all day - i didn't think much of it then but it's starting to all make sense

Allllright...introductions.

My name is Amanda Foster. I'm 19 years old & I'm in my second year at IUPUI. Even though my degree is IU, I'm a Purdue girl at heart & I'm contemplating transferring up there for the last 2 years. I'm not really sure how to describe myself...I wish on 11:11. I love really meaningful quotes. I deeply prefer wearing skirts & dresses to pants. My mind thinks like a Sarah Dessen book. I don't like it when people take me too seriously. I have this wicked mischievous streak that seems to appear at the most inopportune moments. I'm drawn to intensity, passion & emotion in people. I have big plans for my life.

I thought blogger was very easy to set up, compared to other blogging sites I'm part of. Livejournal took forever for me to figure out & to customize so that the design truly said me. Tumblr was relatively easy also - figuring out what was going on on the homepage took a moment.

I'm not very good at giving tips or suggestions. I guess the thing I've learned with other blogs is to A) be yourself but B) don't just blatantly talk about people in your life. More likely than not, they will find your blog, or someone will direct them to your blog. They'll either want you to say it to your face, or they'll want you to stop announcing their life to everyone. It's a very tricky line to not cross. I've fortunately never had a problem (knock on wood) but I know people that have & they really have to clean things up.

alright...i'm giving this a go, even if it is 2 in the morning. I figure I've got a million other blogs, or blog like things, so how difficult can this be? We'll see what happens...I also figure that I might as well knock some of my homework out early. Thank goodness for coffee in the morning.

Introduce myself?

Oh gosh, I never know what to say. I'm 19 years old. I'm in my sophomore year at IUPUI, for Elementary Education. I'll work on this more the closer I get to this needing to be turned in, mmkay? mmkay.
